Plan Check Kitchen + Bar (Review)

Terry Heller, a former real estate developer, recently dove into his dream of opening a blue-collar neighborhood restaurant and bar. I wouldn’t say that this place is for blue collar folks as many of the items on the menu were quite pricey, but the communal tables give this place a great inviting atmosphere.  The menu is all-American with a Japanese flair. They have playful names for their drinks, such as Godzilla and Bento Box. Their Blueprint burger pays homage to the architects and developers nearby.

Along the way of creating a bar with craft and mainstream beer, he has acquired the former corporate chef of Umami, Ernesto Uchimura, to create the food offerings.  The burgers were very similar in size as the Umami burgers.  Where Umami is known for their parmesan crisp, Plan Check is known for their ketchup leather.  I found this to be an ingenious way to give patrons the taste of ketchup without the mess and as I am someone who loves ketchup, the more the merrier. I love how the burgers at Plan Check still taste like an American burger.  The burger isn’t masked with a bunch of ingredients you can’t pronounce or have never heard of—just really high quality ingredients.  The burger patty is made out of wagyu beef, the perfect balance of rich fatty goodness. The Chef’s Favorite burger is a perfect balance of beef, ketchup, bacon, and cheese. The PCB (Plan Check) burger, although still really good, could use a little more grilled onions. The grilled onions give the burger a savory and sweet flavor, but I felt that some parts of the burger were plainer because it had an empty spot without grilled onions. The bun was tender and moist on the inside and hard with a crackling on the outside so that it was sturdy enough to handle the meat.

Overall, I think this is a great addition to Little Osaka. Although it is bit on the pricey side, $10-12 a burger, it’s nice to have a really well made burger every now and then and it’s a great place to gather and enjoy each other’s company.
